Revelation 2:2-5 in The Message version says:
“I see what you’ve done, your hard, hard work, your refusal to quit. I know you can’t stomach evil, that you weed out apostolic pretenders. I know your persistence, your courage in my cause, that you never wear out. But you walked away from your first love—why? What’s going on with you, anyway? Do you have any idea how far you’ve fallen? A Lucifer fall! Turn back! Recover your dear early love. No time to waste, for I’m well on my way to removing your light from the golden circle.”
Remember that time you first fell in love? It could have been with a person, your job, a healthy lifestyle. There were sparks! You were set on fire and driven by passion to love and protect your relationship with that person / your job / food.
As time has passed, I’m sure that you have faced some trials. Your loved one’s quirky mannerisms may have become annoying, your boss may have changed the way you feel about your job, or perhaps you found out that cake was way nicer than plain tuna on rye.
Then, at some point during your efforts to rectify the way you felt about “that person / your job / food”, you may have forgotten why you started in the first place, and more so, how you felt when you first started.
Often we treat God this way. We come to church, have an encounter with Him, get set on fire for His cause, but then get so busy doing stuff for Him, that we forget about Him.
Today, take a moment to remember the time you first fell in love with God, and remember that “We love because He first loved us.” – 1 John 4: 19
