PRAYER & FASTING DEVOTIONAL DAY 3

Burning with Us

By Michelle Bruyns

They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
Luke 24:32

In this passage of scripture, we see Jesus meet with two of his followers as they walk the long road to Emmaus. The men do not recognise him at first, but he reveals himself to them right before he leaves.

As they walk and talk with Jesus, the men share that they are dealing with the disappointment and uncertainty of seeing their long-awaited Messiah crucified. At the same time, they had just heard that Jesus’ tomb had been found empty by the women who had visited there, and so within in them burns a glimmer of hope.

Jesus’ response is an incisive and loving walk-through of the Scripture that speaks directly into the challenges and uncertainties these two men were facing. He could have simply just revealed himself to them then and there but he chooses to affirm for them the authority of scripture. And the men’s hearts burn within them as He does so.

Let’s be reminded today that Jesus can do the same for us. That as we open our hearts to him about what it is we are grappling with, His desire is that we would open our eyes to his Word and let him open the scriptures to us as we read them, hearts burning within us as we do so.
