The Principle of Tithing

Day 1: The Principle of Honour

“Honour the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops.” – Proverbs 3:9 (NIV)

Reflection:
To honour means to assign high value, esteem, and worth. When we honour God with our
wealth, we are declaring that He holds first place in our hearts. Tithing isn’t about tipping God or
fulfilling a rule—it’s about revealing what we treasure most. Just like it would feel dishonouring
to attend a wedding without bringing a gift, our giving reflects our heart posture toward God.

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). If you want
to know what you truly honour, look at where your money consistently goes.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to honour You not just with my words, but with my wealth. Let my giving reflect
the high place You hold in my life.

Challenge:
Examine your last month’s spending. Does it reflect honour toward God? What adjustment can
you make this week to show Him priority?

Day 2: The Principle of First

“…with the firstfruits of all your crops.” – Proverbs 3:9b (NIV)

Reflection:
In ancient Israel, the “firstfruits” were literally the first and best of the harvest. This principle
wasn’t about leftovers; it was about priority. God was honoured first—before anything else was
used or consumed.

For us today, this speaks to putting God first not only in our giving, but in our living. It’s easy to
give from what’s left over—after bills, spending, and saving—but tithing is an act of conviction,
not convenience. When we tithe first, we declare that God comes before our needs, desires, and
fears.

Prayer:
Father, I want You to be first in every area of my life. Help me to trust You enough to give You
the first and best of what I receive.

Challenge:
If you don’t already, try tithing first this week before any other expense. See what it does to your
mindset and faith.

Day 3: The Principle of Trust

“Then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” –
Proverbs 3:10 (NIV)

Reflection:
Tithing is not just about giving—it’s about trusting. It’s a declaration that God is your provider,
not your salary, your business, or your budget. When we give God our first and best, we’re
inviting Him to bless the rest.

God doesn’t promise we’ll be rich, but He does promise sufficiency and blessing for those who
trust Him. Often, we withhold out of fear—fear of not having enough, fear of future needs. But
Scripture reminds us: “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply
and increase your store of seed” (2 Corinthians 9:10).

Prayer:
God, I confess my tendency to rely on myself. Teach me to trust You more deeply and give with
open hands and faith-filled heart.

Challenge:
Write down what’s keeping you from trusting God fully with your finances. Offer it to Him in
prayer today.

Day 4: The Pattern of Tithing – Old & New

“Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.” – Genesis 14:20 (NLT)
“You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.” – Matthew 23:23 (NLT)

Reflection:

Tithing didn’t start with the Law of Moses—it began as a voluntary act of honour and worship.
Abraham gave a tenth to Melchizedek, long before any command was written. Jacob promised a
tenth to God as a way of worship and dependence. The Law later institutionalized it, and Jesus
Himself affirmed it—“You should tithe…”—while reminding us it must come from the heart.

In the New Testament, we see believers living with radical generosity, going beyond 10%. They
sold homes, shared meals, and gave sacrificially. Tithing is not a rule to bind us, but a principle
to free us. It’s not about law—it’s about lordship.

Prayer:
Jesus, thank You that I don’t give to earn Your love but as a response to it. Teach me to live
generously, beyond obligation.

Challenge:
Rethink your view of tithing. Is it a rule or a response for you? Pray about how God wants to
grow your generosity beyond percentages.

Day 5: Tithing with Purpose

“Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship…” – Deuteronomy 14:23 (NLT)
“You must each decide in your heart how much to give… For God loves a person who gives
cheerfully.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)

Reflection:
Tithing is not just about giving to God—it’s also about giving for God’s purposes. In the Old
Testament, tithes funded the temple, priests, festivals, and care for the poor. In the New
Testament, they supported gospel ministry, church planting, and care for those in need.

When we tithe today, we’re partnering with God to build His Kingdom on earth. Your giving has
eternal impact—empowering the church, discipling the next generation, planting churches, and
reaching the lost.

Tithing is Kingdom investment. It’s sowing seed that multiplies into salvation stories, changed
lives, and community transformation.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You that I get to be part of something greater than myself. Use my giving to build
Your Kingdom and bring hope to many.

Challenge:
Ask God to show you the impact of your giving. Consider giving with intentionality to a ministry
or mission that reflects God’s heart.
